CHAPTER 15
When she finally made it home, Della was certain she knew what Martinâs story was going to be about. There was no question now that it was the missing girls heâd been looking into. She still wasnât certain what heâd found, but she was sure it was linked to that. Penny had confirmed that for her. It was a start, and that made her feel like she was finally getting somewhere.
She hadnât been home long before she started to feel the effects of the day. Sheâd done a lot of work at the store to stay busy and then being out at the bar had drained her more than sheâd expected. The buzz of the crowd and her excitement over speaking with Penny had created something of a high she was now crashing from. Della changed into her pajamas, slipped under the blankets on her bed, and then she reflected on her day.
She hated that it was starting to feel more and more like an investigation, which was the one thing she very clearly had said she wouldnât do anymore. Sheâd done her best to keep things light, not diving into the list of names and trying to meet with each one. She knew what questioning everyone would lead to.
But the worst part was, she didnât see that she had any choice. If it had been something smaller, like a burglary someone wanted her to help with or maybe even a missing person, she thought sheâd be able to turn away from it. But how could she refuse to look into something when the man who asked was no longer alive?
Not only that, but Martin had come directly to her for help and left everything heâd collected in her care. How could she just ignore that? She easily knew the answer to that. She couldnât.
Slipping farther down underneath the blankets, she reached out and flipped off the light. Her intention was what mattered, and she didnât intend to start a whole investigation. All she was doing was trying to fit the pieces together. That wasnât investigating. That was just trying to understand what Martin had discovered. If she had to talk to a person or two in order to understand that, she didnât feel she was breaking her promise.
âUgh,â Della groaned as she flipped over in bed just as Moose jumped up on the foot of the bed. She knew she was dancing on a thin line. But she didnât want to be known as the lady who did all those investigations. She couldnât articulate that it made her feel as if she was a busybody and that when people saw her coming, theyâd wonder what she was up to.
She lay there for a while, trying to sleep, but the more she tried, the more her mind wouldnât rest. She needed a distraction. Sitting up, she flipped the lamp back on and looked around. What could she use to help her forget about everything long enough to get some rest? Her eyes landed on the Flip game console on her dresser.
